The stone's name is from the Greek word for "mallow", a green herb. Malachite was used as a mineral pigment in green paints (found in the paintings of Egyptian tombs) eye shadows, and adornment. Malachite is extensively mined at King Solomon's Mines.
Russian czars used Malachite for ornaments and paneling for their castles, and intricate inlay work. 3.5 to 4 Moh’s hardness.
